| Anna and Laura Tirocchi were sister dressmakers in Providence, Rhode Island, whose business was most prominent during the 1920s and '30s. They specialized in custom designed, sumptuous gowns for the city’s elite women, and are particularly remembered because their business was preserved in situ after 1947 and made into the subject of an exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in 2001.The Tirocchis were born into a landowning family in the working-class town of Guarcino, Italy, but were able to receive high quality training when they moved with their mother to Rome. They immigrated to New York in 1908, when Anna was in her mid thirties and Laura around twenty, and found themselves in Providence by 1911. Several family members had already been living in the city, and its prominent Italian immigrant population may have been a draw. By the 1920s, the sisters had gained respect within several of Providence's diverse communities and began traveling along the East Coast and across the Atlantic to further their business and personal commitments. Anna remained visible as a premiere gown designer in Providence during the Great Depression, as independent dressmakers closed by the hundreds and ready-to-wear fashion overtook custom tailoring. |
