Irritator is a genus of spinosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Brazil during the Early Cretaceous Period, around 110 million years ago. Like other spinosaurs, it had long and narrow jaws with generally straight cone-shaped teeth, nostrils positioned far back on the head, and a sagittal crest on the rear of its snout. Its diet would have mainly comprised fish and other small prey animals. Fossil evidence is known of an individual that ate a pterosaur, possibly from hunting or scavenging it. Irritator was between 6 and 8 metres (20 and 26 ft) in length, and weighed around 1 tonne (1.1 short tons), making it one of the smallest members of its family. * It was first described from a nearly complete skull found in the Romualdo Member, originally identified as a member of the Santana Formation, and later elevated to a separate formation; the Romualdo Formation. Fossil dealers illegally acquired this skull and artificially lengthened the front of it, requiring many hours of restoration from paleontologists; thus, the genus was named Irritator to express the frustration the authors felt. The epithet of the type species Irritator challengeri is a reference to a character in Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, The Lost World. * Irritator was originally considered a maniraptoran dinosaur, closely related to the feathered ornithomimids and troodontids, until it was assigned to the Spinosauridae by later studies. The genus is regarded today as possibly synonymous with Angaturama, known from a snout tip that was described from the same stratigraphic units of the Araripe Basin, where Irritator was found. Spinosaurid skeletal material has been discovered in the Romualdo Formation, but paleontologists are uncertain whether it belongs to Irritator or Angaturama. Few dinosaurs have been found in the Santana Formation; most of the known vertebrate fauna from this unit consists largely of pterosaurs and fish. |
