Royan (French pronunciation: ​[ʁwa.jɑ̃]; locally [ʁwe.jɑ̃] in Saintongeais dialect) is a commune in the south-west of France, located in the Department of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called Royannais and Royannaises. It is the capital of the Côte de Beauté and one of the main seaside resorts on the French Atlantic coast. It has five beaches, a marina that can accommodate more than 1,000 boats, and an active fishing port.
* The city center houses 18,393 inhabitants, as of 2015, while the greater urban area has 48,982 inhabitants, as of 2013.
* Royan is located on the peninsula of Arvert, on the right bank of the mouth of the largest estuary in Europe, the Gironde. Royan was once a strategic site, coveted by the Visigoths in particular, and the Vikings. Under English rule during the Hundred Years War, the city became a Protestant stronghold and was besieged and destroyed by Louis XIII. During the Restoration, and especially beginning with the Second Empire, Royan acquired great fame due to its sea baths. It hosted many artists during the Roaring Twenties.
* It was destroyed by allied bombing between September 1944 and April 1945. The martyred city was declared a Laboratory of research on urbanism and is now representative of the architectural heritage of the 1950s (Modernist architecture). It was classified as a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (Towns of Art and History) in 2010. Today, Royan is a tourist and cultural center welcoming 90,000 visitors each summer season.
