The area mostly functions as a single jurisdiction for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy. The area is named after the Schengen Agreement. States in the Schengen Area have strengthened border controls with non-Schengen countries.

Countries outside of the Schengen area also benefit.Following the migration crisis, as of July 2018, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden have temporarily imposed the reintroduction of border controls at some or all internal borders pursuant to Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code, citing security threats. In consequence of the November 2015 Paris attacks and subsequent attacks in France, France declared a state of emergency, which reinstated border control at all international borders until November 2018.
