The gentry (genterie; Old French gentil: "high-born") are the "well-born, genteel, and well-bred people" of the social class below the nobility of a society. In contrast to the nobility, the gentry never obtained the right to bear a coat of arms, but, as families of long descent, they inherited a socio-economic position that connected them to the landed estates (manorialism) and to the upper levels of the clergy.
