* It is the largest town in the arrondissement of Belley and the capital of the Canton of Ambérieu-en-Bugey which consists of 8 communes with a total of 21,226 inhabitants in 2007 with 17,466 inhabitants in its own urban area in 2010.
* It is also the capital of the historic region of Bugey.
* Its inhabitants are known as Ambarrois or Ambarroises. The city was called Ambérieu until 31 March 1955 when it became Ambérieu-en-Bugey.
