A jigsaw puzzle is a tilling puzzle that requires the assembly of
numerous small interlocking pieces. Each picture as a small part of a
picture on it; when complete, a jigsaw puzzle produce a complete
picture. People solve jigsaw puzzles as a hobby.
Typical pictures used in jigsaw
puzzles include scenes from nature, buildings, animals, cartoons,
celebrities etc. Some softwares now allows you to select picture for the

The origins of jigsaw puzzles go back to the 1760s when European
mapmakers pasted maps onto wood and cut them into small pieces. The
"dissected map" has been a successful educational toy ever since.
American children still learn geography by playing with puzzle maps of
the United States or the world. First jigsaw puzzle was produced around
1760 by John Spilsbury. In 1820 jigsaw puzzles became primarily
educational tools.
Cardboard puzzles were first introduced in the late 1800's, and were
primarliy used for children's puzzles. Thus, in the early 1900's both
wooden and cardboard jigsaw puzzles were available in the markets.The
autumn of 1932 brought a novel concept, the weekly jigsaw puzzle. The
die-cut "Jig of the Week" retailed for 25 cents and appeared on the news
stands every Wednesday. |
